What is rake? Let's get back to the theory and terminology

Most poker players, even in 2019, ask themselves the question: what is rakeback, what is rake, how does rakeback poker work, and why is it needed at all? Rake in poker is a passive source of income for poker rooms and represents a commission that is deducted from players for the opportunities provided to play on these very resources. If we talk about cash games, the project rake determines the share of the total pot that is paid to participants, and it usually amounts to no more than 5%. Such funds do not go to the prize funds, but directly to the wallets of the resource owners. In tournaments, the rake can be up to 10%, but must not exceed 20%.

At first glance, it may seem that this is a small amount, but if you imagine the number of players who are on the resource in a certain period of time, then the result is a fairly significant amount of money, the account goes for thousands of dollars.

Poker rakeback returns come in various forms, starting with a direct refund of interest in the form of cash and ending with bonuses. Rakeback can also be added to those who attract additional players to the resource.

Rake as a source of permanent income

Thanks to the rake, you can organize a permanent source of income. The main thing is to be able to properly manage funds from poker rooms, investing them correctly. The rake calculation in each case depends on the amount of money that players contribute when taking part in cash games. Rake is taken from a common pot, which can be used by several players at the same time. In order to determine the share between participants, there are several methods that everyone needs to know about.

Deal-rake

Here, the total amount of investment is divided among all participants in the hand, resulting in rake accrual. At the same time, the rake distribution can also be made by those who did not invest funds, but simply folded preflop. There are almost no rooms with such a rake system now, except for the Horizon network and the JuicyStakes room, where we present the deal. Such a rake distribution system encourages the regulars to play a straight game and does not provoke action.

Contributed-рейк

Here, the pot amount is distributed equally among all players who have invested money in the hand. "Freeloaders" in this case will not receive a single cent. However, the situation is not perfect, because different players can deposit different amounts, so it is not profitable for everyone to share the rake equally.

Weight-contributed-рейк

This is the main type of rake and this method of calculation is now used in most poker rooms. The amount is distributed according to the amount of money invested by each participant of the game. The most fair system of rake accrual, respected by all regulars, as the rake always more or less coincides with the rake report in the poker tracker.

TVR rake

Calculates the distribution of rake between various poker rooms within the network, as well as affiliates in the Microgaming network. In most cases, the TVR (True Value Rake) rake does not differ much from the real one - 10-15 percent, but if the player shows very good results in profit, a lot of cash out, the network can lower the TVR rake to 40-50 percent of the real one. I am glad that such cases are very rare in practice and most players do not actually see the difference between real and TVR rake.

SBR rake

It takes into account not only how much money you have deposited during the distribution to the bank, but also whether you are playing with money from the deposit or with money won from other players. It is used in rooms of the iPoker network. SBR (Source Based Rake) was introduced in 2015 and significantly affected network traffic downwards. The idea behind the new system was to encourage skins to bring amateur traffic to the network, rather than professional traffic, since until 2015, the iPoker field mostly consisted of regulars and bots that rake on rakeback, the value of which in some cases reached more than 100% due to dumping of network skin races. The rake received under the SBR system can be 50-60% of the real rake for an average regular and up to 100% for an amateur player.

PVI rake

Distributes and calculates rakeback based on the user's game rating. The rating is based on a variety of parameters, some of which the poker network does not disclose. It exists in the GG network. PVI (Player Value Index) takes into account many parameters of each player, including the frequency and amount of deposits and cashouts, how often and how much the player wins at the tables, and so on. The PVI index can be from 0 to 2 (those players who make deposits and often lose have a PVI closer to 2, while winning players can reach even 0.3). For the average regular player, the rake accrued under this system is 30-40% of the real one.

Looking at the latest rake systems in the list, you can see that some poker rooms have a more complicated rake calculation formula and it is not as transparent as others.
When choosing a room, always take into account not only the amount of rakeback, but also the amount of rake charged, as well as the rake accrual system. Only evaluating all this information will help you choose the best rakeback deal for you.

How is rake paid?

There are several methods for calculating rooms with affiliates. For rakeback deals, 2 main ones are relevant - this is the payment of a percentage of the total rake (Gross) and the payment from the Net Revenue Rake (Net Revenue Rake).

Gross deals

The affiliate receives a percentage of the total rake played by the player in this room, and shares it with the player accordingly. This is the simplest and most convenient scheme for everyone - a player can more or less evaluate their future rakeback by comparing it with the current rake reports in their poker tracker.

Revenue of the transaction

The affiliate gets a percentage of the player's rake minus all the room's spending on that player during the reporting period. These are bonus payments to the player, prize money for rake races, as well as payment system commissions for deposits and cashouts of the player. Everyone knows that any payment system, every e-wallet, or bank charges a percentage for servicing each transfer, while offline service providers usually cover this percentage, but most poker rooms do not want to do this, because due to frequent deposits and cashouts, these deductions can reach substantial amounts and profit from each player it turns out to be negative. These commissions are especially painful when a player decides to fill the VIP status of Skrill or Neteller in one of the rooms. Therefore, currently the largest number of poker rooms operate according to this calculation scheme.

Check with your affiliate the transaction settlement method before you make a deposit and start playing in the poker room to avoid misunderstandings when receiving rakeback.
